The Justice Department sued Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Arizona's Maricopa County, on Thursday, saying his office has repeatedly declined to hand over documents to federal investigators examining whether his aggressive tactics against illegal immigrants have violated their civil rights

In a statement, Arpaio and his attorney suggested that the lawsuit is a publicity stunt and said that the sheriff's office had turned over "thousands of pages" of documents and that it pledged as recently as this week to cooperate with federal authorities.

"These actions make it abundantly clear that Arizona, including the Sheriff, is Washington's new whipping boy," Arpaio said in a statement. "It's time to take the gloves off."

The lawsuit is the third filed by the Justice Department in connection with how authorities in Arizona handle illegal immigrants. On Monday, the department sued a network of community colleges in Maricopa County, saying they placed illegal requirements on non-citizens seeking jobs. In May, the department sued the state and Gov. Jan Brewer (R) over the state's new immigration law.

Great job Eric Holder, you show Americans that illegal aliens take precedent over U.S. citizens!! [extreme sarcasm]

Robyn, Sheriff Joe has cost Arizona taxpayers over $40 million due to lawsuits. His jail has lost certification numerous times. You would be wise to do some research and learn how this reaches much further than illegal immigration. I'm more than happy to point you in the right direction.

What do you dislike about laws being enforced? I report crime in my neighborhood. I expect my police to respond. That is why I vote for politicians that pledge to uphold the laws on the books and I do not vote for scum that wage political agendas against our own states in order to please foreign illegal immigrants.

Sheriff Arpaio IS enforcing the laws of his state. I know libs don't like it, but if you don't want to enforce the immigration laws of our country, then you need to repeal them, not stick you head in the sand and act like we don't even have any!

Thank you, Eric Holder!!! It's such a relief to see Washington enforcing the law in Phoenix -- you know, the actual law, not something made up by backwoods "I don't have to obey the law if I don't wanna" racist pigs like Sheriff Joe. What he does is WAY more illegal than the immigration violations, at least for the damage it does to society and the defiance of our U.S. Constitution. Finally, we have authorities who will hold him accountable!! Another Selma Alabama bites the dust!! (Those interferin' commie govt agents from Washington -- ha!)

He IS the duly elected Sheriff of Maricopa County, AZ and he is doing the job of enforcing the laws that the people of AZ voted for and approved. Who does Eric holder and Barak Hussein Obama think they are to REFUSE to enforce the laws on the Federal books and instead giving illegal aliens preferential status over US citizens? They can't / won't tell you what they want this country to be when they are finished, they just are determined to reduce it to the corrupt standard of Mexico.

Howdy there robynlewisTX- if you don't mind my asking, what part of our great state of Texas do you hail from? Betcha don't know and love as many people of Mexican decent as we do down here in San Antonio! You're pretty gol' dang intolerant. Have your kids ever gone hungry? Better question- if you had kids, and they were hungry, would you break a law to feed 'em, or just let 'em starve, you bein' such a law abidin' citizen and such? Your correspondence is much obliged, ma'am.

The Coastal Bend. I'm a lot further south than you are jupiter.

Betcha don't know and love as many people of Mexican decent as we do down here in San Antonio!

All 4 of my children are Hispanic thank you.

Better question- if you had kids, and they were hungry, would you break a law to feed 'em, or just let 'em starve, you bein' such a law abidin' citizen and such?

And just for the record; there are MANY Hispanics who feel the same way I do.

If I didn't think I could support my children I wouldn't have had them in the first place. Nobody is forcing these people to procreate. If they don't have enough brains to think about how they intend to feed, clothe, and house these kids they're wanting, then they don't have any business expecting others to do it for them. Same goes for the people in this country too! Having 5, 8, or 10 kids and not being able to support them is child abuse. Burdening other people who DO have kids to pay for yours is criminal.

Your correspondence is much obliged, ma'am.

Mine was a valid question, you just didn't like it :oP. I really don't care to know about your sex life, I was just betting that you don't only do it when you want another kid. So you would let a kid go hungry because their parents should have abstained? Would you be in support of family planning funding if it meant less children for those who can't afford them?

It's funny how the perception of Arpaio is pretty narrowly focused on illegal immigration when he's also known locally for abuse of authority, politically motivated arrests, the other lawsuits against him that have been settled out of the taxes I pay, the false arrests, etc., etc. It would be nice if he sent those press releases so people in Texas could know the truth that we here locally know about the Clown in Brown.

WoW!! The Justice department suing an Arizona Sheriff for violating Civil rights..There's a bit of irony for ya..

“That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe,” Obama said.

http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/obama-arresting-illegal-immigrants-may-violate-civil-rights-laws/

Fine..when they decide to come here legally then we as Americans should treat them with the fairness they deserve

(p.s.- you also could use to brush up on some of the other topics you brought up there- particularly ACORN which was cleared of all wrongdoing FOX "news" had reported on earlier- they just forgot to tell you. I just thought I would let you know :o)

The law abiding citizens of AZ of Mexican, Anglo and all ethnic descent. I see many Hispanic officers on his staff defending his policies and enforcing AZ law. I see illegal aliens demanding their "rights" in a country that they are trespassing in. I encourage anyone to better their stand in life but not by breaking the laws. If your Mexico is so bad, fight to change it for the better instead of fighting to change America for the worse.

ACORN which was cleared of all wrongdoing

Yea, I heard about that. I was really convinced more by the video showing how the "social worker" was clearing herself of wrongdoing by agreeing and advising how to set up child prostitute housing at taxpayer expense. No, the thing didn't go to court because the video was deemed obtained under the wrong rules but that doesn't make a crooked POS into a straight one.

Good night y'all, gotta get some sleep so I can earn some stimulus money. Obammy's cling-ons gonna need it with all the layoffs and such. It's been fun,... again. I'll pray God takes a liking to ya!!

You must have fallen asleep after the cartoon before the movie. The video showing "the social worker clearing herself of wrongdoing" -- the one that has you "really convinced" -- the social worker is a man. You didn't even see what you're spouting off unintelligently about. So you haven't seen either how it was doctored.

You haven't seen how the social worker pumped them for information, called his contact at the San Diego police and reported the incident as soon as they left -- which was why the charges were dropped immediately in Calif.

They were cleared of all wrongdoing which had NOTHING to do with "the video was deemed obtained under the wrong rules" -- did you just make that up? It sounds like it.

And the ONLY crooked POS in this story were the makers of the fake video, the news organization who wanted to destroy ACORN for registering Democrats to vote, and the ditto heads who perpetually regurgitate false information and fake outrage about something that didn't even happen as a way to discredit a President who upholds the rights of everyone -- even the slimeballs who say this @!$%# about him.

Get your sleep. Cartoon is almost over.

My apologies storyartist. We are talking about 2 different aspects of something that is not part of this thread. I referred to ACORN first so I will take the fault for the hijack. I don't change my opinion of ACORN or any of the others I mentioned. I have similar negative views for Republican POSs so please don't try to box me up as a right winger or anything but a Centrist Independent with conservative tendencies. I view the laws in a right and wrong division. My gray areas are thin. Laws that have been voted in by the people should be enforced. If they are not right or legal repeal them or vote them changed.

The Sheriff best be careful. He needs to remember WACO and see how murderous the Govt can be against innocent civilians when they dont like what they dont like. Especially under Democratic Presidents. 74 people died in that encounter. Criminals Bill Clinton and Janet Reno never saw a day in jail. 20 children and 2 pregnant woman among those burned to death without trial or evidence of wrongdoing in order for the Govt to show who is in charge. Give em their dam papers if you havent already and have your town mobilized against the same Govt type terrorist attack.
